WHO ARE THE EZZA/EZAA PEOPLE?

Ezza is an Igbo sub-group, in Southeastern Nigeria. As a people, Ezzas are collectively referred to by the singular name Ezza/Ezaa or Ezza-Ezekuna in reference to their progenitor – Ezekuna.

Onueke is the ancestral headquarters of the Ezza. Ezza people live in virtually all three senatorial zones of Ebonyi State and beyond. Ezzas are found predominantly in the three Senatorial Zones – Ebonyi Central, North and South and specifically in Ezza North, Ezza South, Onicha, Ishielu and Ohaukwu Local Government Areas. Ezza have twenty-two notable communities across Ebonyi state, prominent amongst them include Amana, Ezzama, Amuzu, Ameka, Oriuzor, Amezekwe, Amegu, Amudo, Idembia, Ekka. They also reside in various communities such as Ezza-Effium, Ezza-Ezillo, Abaomege, Ukawu, etc; and a very significant number live in parts of Enugu, Benue, Cross River States and other parts of Nigeria. The traditional Ezzas in these areas still return to Onueke to pay homage and or offer sacrifices to the graves of their progenitors: Ezekuna and his wife, Anyigo Ezekuna. Ezza language is spoken by Ezzas.

WHO IS EZEKUNA?

Ezekuna is the ancestral father of Ezza people. The father of Ezekuna was Anakiwha who was also the father of Olodo and Noyo (the ancestral fathers of Izzi and Ikwo people) respectively. Ezekuna’s life and achievements are part of our authentic Ezza heritage. During his time, Ezekuna embarked on several path-breaking and redemptive wars, He was decorated with many titles and honours for his successes and wisdom. As a mediator, he brought peace among his constantly warring sons and their neighbours.

But, despite Ezekuna’s bravery and wisdom in promoting justice, peace and reconciliation, his name and other Ezza historical legends like Akputa Nwa-Unoke are hardly remembered today. Ezza Adepts legacies, however, are so important to be ignored. Ezekuna saw leadership and involvement in ethnic peacebuilding as essential to the goal of peace and security of Ezza people. During his time, he served the cause of peace as an Ezza diplomat and peacemaker. He had helped to create reconciliation among the three brotherly nations of Ezza, Izzi and Ikwo which his sons Ezekuna, Olodo and Noyo founded. Ezekuna played a leading role in the conception and conduct of Ezza people’s moral codes which still guide the lives and behaviour of Ezza, Izzi and Ikwo modern societies. We are one people.
